What is a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies are urgent oral health issues that require immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. If you have a dental emergency, you must be seen as soon as possible to alleviate your pain and save your natural tooth. Waiting too long could lead to complications or permanent tooth loss.

Common Dental Emergencies

  • Severe Toothache: Pain that doesn’t go away and interferes with eating, sleeping, or daily life. A severe toothache may indicate infection, decay, or an abscess.
  • Chipped, Cracked, or broken tooth: This is especially urgent if it’s painful or bleeding or if a large piece is missing.
  • Knocked-out tooth (Avulsed Tooth): Any tooth that has completely come out of the socket needs immediate care.
  • Loose or Partially Dislodged Teeth are often caused by trauma or infection. If treated quickly, they can often be stabilized
  • Abscess or Infection: An abscess or advanced infection is a swollen area with pus (often painful) that can lead to serious health problems if untreated. Symptoms may include fever, swelling, a bad taste in the mouth, or pain when chewing.
  • Bleeding That Won’t Stop: Excessive bleeding following trauma or dental work (like tooth extraction) needs urgent care if it lasts more than 10–15 minutes.
  • Lost Filling, Crown, or Bridge: Although not always an emergency, it can be if it causes pain or exposes sensitive areas. If you are in doubt, contact our office and ask.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Lacerations to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums that won’t stop bleeding.
  • Jaw Pain or Locking (TMJ Issues): A sudden inability to open or close your mouth properly, especially after trauma, always warrants a trip to an emergency dentist.
